Two years after evading capture from the country’s law enforcement, I decided to return to the scene of the crime, and embark on a second voyage by visiting some of America’s strange and obscure festivals and events. The three-month trip, summarised quite nicely in the books Around The Weird In 80 Days (the name in the UK), and The Great American Attraction (the American’s choice of title), is yet another hedonistic venture into small-town America to witness the eccentric characters and absolute delights it contains. With eleven events ranging from The National Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa, and The World’s Largest Prison Rodeo in Oklahoma, to East Dublin’s Redneck Games, surely the book is worth a read, isn’t it? Even my mum said it was better than my first. Mind you, she also said I was the most handsome boy in my school.

UK FlagIf you live in dear old Blighty and wish to purchase a copy of the book, you can do so by clicking on the cover to the left-hand-side of your screen. (And yes, in case you were wondering, that is a Phileas Foggesque balloon containing me, Bec, Antony and – for some reason never explained to me by the publishers – a horse).

If you feel at greater ease with such sentences as: “I was throwing a band aid I’d found on the sidewalk into the dumpster with the rest of the garbage when some douche bag on his cell phone came out of left-field, and careened his gray RV counter clockwise into the parking lot”, US Flag then you’ll be more comfortable with this version.
